The text also presents a great example of descriptive text and the ability to work on visualization as a comprehension strategy. There are some more adult situations that are easily modified beforehand. While I was first introduced to this story in high school, it can be adapted through slight changes for Grades 6 through 8. When I later met my husband we discovered we remembered both the same story, not having attended the same schools but having teachers who valued the concepts and questions that the story raised. It wasn’t as if I remembered it in great detail, but I knew the general feeling and the gist of the story: it left that much emotional impression in me. The story “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” was one that I remember from my own education.
